In addition to teaching a course in human trafficking at Kutztown University, Donna Sabella is working with the student Social Welfare Club, which has made trafficking its focus this year.
Sabella said the group plans events on campus and in the community to raise awareness of human trafficking, a global web of crime that law enforcement said includes Berks County.
Student Eric Kyere of Ghana, who is studying social work as a KU graduate student, is active in the Social Welfare Club.
"The focus of the club is on human trafficking and I work on research into human trafficking," said Kyere, who is working with the club for credit toward his degree. "My research into human trafficking involves what it is, how to track victims and perpetrators, and a policy I developed in response to human trafficking."
Kyere, 27, said he was not aware of human trafficking until he came to study at Kutztown. He said he now realizes that it is an issue in his homeland of Ghana and in many other countries.
